This device is used to measure the friction properties of pavement surfaces and skid resistance, both for in-situ and laboratory applications. The friction pendulum measures the energy loss as a standardized rubber pad, attached to the end of the pendulum arm and pressed by a spring, slides across the test surface, providing the skid resistance value. As the arm swings, the frictional force between the pad and the test surface is obtained by measuring the reduction in the pendulum arm’s circular motion. Depending on the test method, application, or country, rubber pads of varying hardness are used.
This equipment is suitable for conducting laboratory tests, as well as for measuring soils in service.
