NCAT Ignition Furnace

Reference: BA001
Standards: EN 12697-39 | ASTM 6307 | AASHTO TP53

Designed to determine the asphalt content of a sample using standardized ignition methods. The asphalt sample is immersed in oxygenated air and weighed continuously throughout the ignition process.

The test involves weighing a sample of hot asphalt mix, then dividing it into equal parts and placing them in two baskets on top of the oven’s support tray. The tray is mounted on a digital electronic scale. A fan draws in ambient air through four ceramic tubes in the support tray, facilitating ignition inside the oven.

The volatiles released from the sample are oxidized as they pass through a ceramic filter heated to 750ºC in a chamber located above the main chamber.

The test ends when the furnace detects that all the bitumen has been incinerated; it then emits a beep and stops the operation. The test time varies between 20 and 40 minutes depending on the sample weight.

A printer prints a results report showing the percentage of bitumen in aggregate and in the mix. The kiln also has an RS232 output to transmit the data to a PC.

The equipment is supplied with a set of trays, insulating gloves, protective face shield, sample protection box, cooling tray, and sample transport stand.
