It is used to determine the consistency of a bituminous sample under fixed conditions of load, time, and temperature. Penetration is expressed as the distance, in tenths of millimeters, penetrated vertically with a standard needle. It is equipped with a magnetic control device with a programmable digital electronic timer, which automatically releases the plunger head and ensures the needle’s free fall during the 5-second test.
